early morning visitor

I awoke abruptly at 4:30am this morning to the sound of rain falling on plastic tarp. That's some loud rain, I thought. And why is there plastic tarp outside my window?

I opened my eyes and stared into the darkness. The rain stopped, then started again: crunchity, crunchity, crunch...*pause*... crunchity, crunch.

I turned on the light by my bed. The sound was coming from my trashcan. I lay frozen, eyes glued to the trash can. A black blur dashed out from the trashcan and zoomed through the crack under my closed door into the dark night of the kitchen.

You little bastard. My glue traps haven't been working.
